Beyond the Sun ][ Summer 2013

You will rise, you are beyond the sun, you are the black gold of the sun.

Starting off in space with a King Britt project and some Comic guitar soundscapes from Carlton Melton. Break through the atmosphere, glide across the oceans with Taragama Pjyarama and Larry Heard. Settle on a beach for a while with some classic soul; an exquisitely mellow grooved out edit of a Roberta Flack song, Rotary Connection and a track featuring Maya Angelou reading her empowering poem Still I Rise.

Then the party gets started, Womack and Womack, Thundercat and heaps of Todd Terje and Freddie Joachim edits!!!

Smoke Drip By Carlton Melton
Ocean (Paxton Fettel's Coastal sunset remix) By Taragana Pyjarama
Serene By Larry Heard
I Can See The Sun (Ole Smokey's Instrumental Chant) By Roberta Flack

Music is the Healing Force of the Universe

Download (Right Click)

Music is the healing force of the universe, its the door of the cosmos and there's some greats here to show you. The intergalactic Sun Ra, the larger than life composer and one of my favourite bassists Charles Mingus and the wonderful Albert Ayler all lead the cosmic way. Look out for serious groove both old and new. And it gets funky towards the end, ending as it had to with a classic Donald Byrd track. Oh and look out for a 19 year old Prince bringing the jazz-funk on keyboards.

Buddy Rich - Kilimanjaro Cookout
Yesterdays New Quintet - Liberated
Sun Ra and his Intergalatic Myth Science Solar Arkestra - Door of the Cosmos
Griot Galaxy - Liberty City Rundown
Ahmad Jamal - Squatty Roo
Lester Young Trio - Rosetta
Charles Mingus - Taurus in the Arena of Life
Abbey Lincoln - Retribution
Albert Ayler - Music is the Healing Force of the Universe
Sun Ra & His Arkestra - That's How I Feel
Stonephace - Five Miles High
Orakel - Come Closer
Bobby Hutcherson - Ummah
Nelson/Cymone/Rivkin - #5
Young-Holt Unlimited - Hey Pancho
Donald Byrd - Wind Parade

Scotland road trippin

This is a mix I put together for the drive between Glasgow and Campbeltown I took for new years down on the farm. Its mainly on a funk/boogie vibe rounded off by two astounding Jay Electronica tracks. The last was done as a tribute to GURU, the sample of the famous Martin Luther King speech never fails to make the hairs at the back of my neck stand up, powerful stuff. Also be sure to check the second Dam Funk track, that is some serious electrofunk synth playing going on there!

As a build up to this Saturday's gig by The Roots with John Legend in London I thought I'd do a compilation along similar lines to the tracks they covered. There's a bit of Max Roach, Gil Scott Heron, Curtis Mayfield, Barabara Mason, James Brown, Rose Royce, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix and more...
